The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) is a factory worker whose whole day is spent tightening bolts on an assembly line that never slows down. Out on the street he meets a Gamin (Paulette Goddard), and the two of them start looking for a place to call home, though he has a gift for being in the wrong spot when trouble arrives. Chaplin wrote, scored and directed the picture himself, building most of its gags out of silent slapstick.
