Nicholas Van der Swart (Kai Luke Brummer) is a quiet young man called up in 1981 South Africa for two years of compulsory service. He has to get through it while hiding that he is gay, in a barracks run by Sergeant Brand (Hilton Pelser), where the word of the title is thrown around as an insult. Oliver Hermanus keeps the camera close on Nicholas, whose attention to another recruit, Dylan Stassen (Ryan de Villiers), is the thing he can least afford to show.
