Journalist Roma Singh (Raveena Tandon) is touring her father's jail when inmates molest her, and a prisoner named Vishal Agnihotri (Suniel Shetty) steps in to help. She learns he is serving time for four killings, and she digs into why with the help of Mr. Jindal (Naseeruddin Shah), who owns her publication. Rajiv Rai puts Vishal outside the gates in his first scene of freedom, a pawn in the title's own word, standing between the prison wall and Jindal's open door.
