The institution where Molly McKay (Elisabeth Shue) has lived since childhood is closing, and with no one else to take her, she lands on the doorstep of her older brother Buck (Aaron Eckhart). Buck is an advertising executive and a lifelong bachelor, and he agrees to an experimental treatment for her. John Duigan keeps the focus on the two siblings, a man who has avoided any claim on his time and a sister he has barely known.
