In Russia in 1905, Pelageya Vlasova (Vera Baranovskaya) keeps house for her husband (Aleksandr Chistyakov) and her grown son Pavel (Nikolai Batalov), and the Revolution has split the two men onto opposite sides. Vsevolod Pudovkin adapts Maxim Gorky's 1906 novel as the first film of his revolutionary trilogy. She wants nothing but her family whole, and she is the one standing between them.
