“Seeing is believing.”

Mother (Jennifer Lawrence) spends her days restoring the country house she shares with her husband, Him (Javier Bardem). Then a stranger (Ed Harris) knocks, and a woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) follows, and they settle in as if the place were theirs. Darren Aronofsky builds the film on how far a person will give up their home, their peace and themselves for the sake of being adored.
