Mouchette

Mouchette (Nadine Nortier) is a girl in a French country village who wants someone, anyone, to be kind to her. Her father drinks, her mother is ill, and the other villagers and her schoolmates treat her with contempt. Robert Bresson adapts the Bernanos novel with a cast that speaks in flat tones, and every small refusal she meets leaves her with less to lose.
