Ellen Arden (Doris Day) spent five years stranded on a South Pacific island after a plane crash, and the Navy finally drops her off in Los Angeles. Her husband Nicholas (James Garner) has had her declared dead and, the same day, is marrying Bianca Steele (Polly Bergen). Michael Gordon sets the three of them on a collision course, and the long marriage between Ellen and Nicholas keeps pulling at him while he stands beside his new wife.
