In a future where one totalitarian state governs every part of daily life, Winston Smith (Edmond O'Brien) spends his working hours rewriting history. Michael Anderson, adapting George Orwell's 1949 novel, follows him as he takes up a small, forbidden act of rebellion. He falls in love with Julia (Jan Sterling), a fellow Outer Party member, and what grows between them is the one thing the state has not yet managed to own.
