A woman looks back over her whole life, and the telling begins in a hotel in frontier Nevada, where Susie Parkington (Greer Garson) works as a maid. Augustus Parkington (Walter Pidgeon), a mine owner and financier, sweeps her off to New York and sets about turning her into a society woman. Tay Garnett moves between the years in flashbacks, and the old woman stays at the center of them, dressed for a house that once held the wealthiest families in New York.
