“The power of love vs. the love of power.”

Los Angeles in the 1950s, and the LAPD keeps a small special squad that deals with the city's worst criminals its own way. Max Hoover (Nick Nolte) leads it with Eddie Hall (Michael Madsen) and Arthur Relyea (Chris Penn), and a young woman's murder pulls them into a case, with Lee Tamahori directing. Max has a wife, Katherine (Melanie Griffith), a badge, and a reputation to lose, and the investigation is already reaching toward all three.
