In the mountain district town of Plainville, a public opinion surveyor has gone missing, and Pete Marshall (Fred MacMurray) is sent in as his replacement. His first stop is the house of Mamie Fleagle (Marjorie Main), where he starts to suspect she and her two sons have done away with the last man. George Marshall directs, and Pete is soon sure Mamie is poisoning wealthy Grandma Fleagle too, while a nonsensical embroidered sampler hides the clue to her fortune.
