In 1973, a five-year-old Danny helps deliver the baby girl next door when her mother goes into emergency labor, and he grows up sure he is meant to marry her. Twenty-five years later he comes back to his hometown and finds Anna Swan (Gretchen Mol), who is already engaged to a perfectly practical man. Charlie Peters has Danny (Jude Law) working his way through her whole eccentric family, and the film keeps asking whether you should trust fate or good sense.
