Sybylla Melvyn (Judy Davis) is a restless girl on her family's struggling farm in rural, late-19th-century Australia, and she wants to be a writer, not a wife. Gillian Armstrong follows her through the pressure from relatives to settle down, and through a budding romance with the wealthy Harry Beecham (Sam Neill). He is willing to wait for her, but she keeps her own counsel.
