Wally (Wallace Shawn), a struggling playwright and actor, sits down to dinner with Andre (Andre Gregory), an old friend he has put off seeing for years. Andre is a theater director who walked away from his career to travel the world, and now he talks, over soup and wine in a Manhattan restaurant, about where he has been. Louis Malle keeps the camera at the table, close on two men and a waiter who keeps refilling the glasses.
