Doug Blake (Jack Carson) is a talent agent whose biggest star, the conceited radio singer Garry Mitchell (Lee Bowman), has just refused to renew his contract. Doug heads to New York and finds Martha Gibson (Doris Day), a single mother with a voice he is sure he can sell. Michael Curtiz films the Hollywood radio world in Technicolor, and the story keeps asking who gets to be a star and who only gets to make one.
