Benjy Stone (Mark Linn-Baker) is a young comedy writer who grew up on the swashbuckling pictures of Alan Swann (Peter O'Toole), so he can hardly believe it when Swann is booked on the variety show he writes for. The man who turns up is a drunken womanizer with stage fright, and Benjy is assigned to keep him in one piece before the broadcast. Richard Benjamin has the pair circle each other, the fan trying to protect the hero, the hero slowly trusting the kid.
