My Friend Ivan Lapshin

Ivan Lapshin (Andrei Boltnev), head of the police in a provincial Russian town, goes about his work through the middle of the 1930s while the Great Purge presses in around him. He does the job well, and he does it among a crowded communal flat of friends and neighbors, including Khanin (Andrey Mironov) and the actress Natasha Adasova (Nina Ruslanova). Aleksei German follows him through those rooms, and what Lapshin wants to hold together is a decent life.
