A film director named Diego (Willem Dafoe) hears the diagnosis, marries his girlfriend of many years, says goodbye to his friends, and settles into long days of treatment in a hospital. There he befriends a Hindu boy who is a fellow patient, until the boy is no longer in his bed. Héctor Babenco follows Diego home and out the other side, where the only question left is what a person owes the people he met while waiting.
