In 1959, twelve-year-old Ingemar Johansson (Anton Glanzelius) is sent from his sick mother to live with his uncle Gunnar (Tomas von Brömssen) and Ulla (Kicki Rundgren) in a small Swedish town. He copes by measuring his own bad luck against people worse off, the dog launched into space among them. Lasse Hallström fills the town with oddball neighbors, and Ingemar finds a friend in Saga (Melinda Kinnaman), a girl who plays rough and binds her chest to pass as a boy.
