The trees around the old country house hold large, quiet forest spirits called Totoros, and only the youngest girl seems to notice them at first. Satsuki (Noriko Hidaka) and Mei (Chika Sakamoto) have moved there with their father to live closer to their mother, who is in the hospital. Miyazaki keeps the story small and close to the two sisters, and when Mei goes missing, Satsuki is the one who goes to find her.
