In 2014, Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline), a broke New Yorker, flies to Paris to sell the grand apartment his estranged father left him. He finds Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith) already living there with her daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas), and under the French viager system she cannot be moved. Israel Horovitz brings his own play to the screen, and what grows between Mathias and Mathilde is an odd, wary closeness.
