Ruth Sherwood (Rosalind Russell) leaves Ohio for New York with one plan, to make it as a writer, while her sister Eileen (Janet Blair) is set on the stage. They land in a dismal basement apartment in Greenwich Village, where an odd assortment of neighbors keeps wandering in and out. Alexander Hall gives the sisters a magazine editor, Bob Baker (Brian Aherne), whose interest in them is not only professional.
