Ruth (Betty Garrett) and her sister Eileen (Janet Leigh) step off the train into Greenwich Village, hunting fame, fortune and a "For Rent" sign on Barrow Street. They find the apartment fast, but the rest takes longer, and Ruth sends a story about Eileen to the publisher Bob Baker (Jack Lemmon). Richard Quine stages the Village as one big crowded stage, with song and dance spilling out of every doorway.
