Agathe Novic (Isabelle Huppert) runs an art gallery, her husband François (André Dussollier) is a publisher, and their son Adrien goes to school with the other children in their tidy corner of France. Then Patrick Demeuleu (Benoît Poelvoorde), a loud, uncouth stranger with no sense of embarrassment, walks into the family's life. Anne Fontaine keeps Agathe's gallery composed and quiet, with Huppert holding herself rigid while Patrick fills every room he enters.
