In 1950s New York, Bill Lee (Peter Weller) kills roaches for a living, and he and his wife Joan (Judy Davis) have started getting high on the powder he sprays. David Cronenberg adapts William S. Burroughs, with Dr. Benway (Roy Scheider) handing Bill a drug made from a centipede and a typewriter that turns into a bug and gives him orders. Joan is still the one he comes home to, the person closest to him, and also the one he cannot keep out of the trouble.
