District Attorney Robert Caulfield (Gene Hackman) is taking Carol Hunnicut (Anne Archer), a reluctant witness to a murder, back to Los Angeles to testify against a mob boss. They board a Vancouver-bound train, and two hitmen sent to silence her are already aboard. Peter Hyams sets the whole chase inside twenty hours of Canadian wilderness, where Caulfield cannot tell who is on his side and a wrong guess costs both their lives.
