István Semetka (Szabó Ferenc) is a Hungarian farmer who ended up a Sub-Lieutenant, serving in a unit sent to scout for partisans across occupied Soviet territory. Dénes Nagy follows the company toward a remote village until enemy fire kills the commander and the command passes to Semetka. He has no training for this and little say in what happens next, and every order he gives now carries the lives of the men beside him.
