Marietta (Jeanette MacDonald), a French princess, trades her name for a servant's and boards a ship to New Orleans rather than marry the man chosen for her. Pirates attack the voyage, and Captain Richard Warrington (Nelson Eddy) is the one who pulls her out. W.S. Van Dyke fills the film with Victor Herbert's songs, "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" among them, and the whole story comes down to two people finding that love can't be arranged for them.
