“Are you a good man or a bad man?”

Bombay in the slums, where a boy named Velu Naicker arrives on the run after killing a corrupt policeman, the man behind his father's murder. Mani Ratnam follows Velu (Kamal Haasan) as the neighborhood begins to treat him as its protector, and the title starts to fit. It is a story about how a community's need for someone to settle its debts can turn a frightened man into a kingpin.
