In 1960 Greece, Homer Thrace (Jules Dassin), an American scholar devoted to the ancient world, finds the country he has studied is not the one he has landed in. He becomes taken with Ilya (Melina Mercouri), a prostitute who lives as she likes and decides he will educate her. Dassin, who also wrote the film, ends on Homer, who has arrived with his books and plans.
