Peter Carter (Patrick Allen) takes a job as school principal and moves his wife Sally (Gwen Watford) and young daughter Jean (Janina Faye) to a quiet Canadian village. Jean's encounter with Clarence Olderberry Sr. (Felix Aylmer), an elderly man whose family runs the town, sets a fear in motion that Cyril Frankel handles with restraint. The Carters have to prove what happened to their child against a man whom nobody in the village will dare to accuse.
