“The war was over and the world was falling in love again.”

It is V-J Day in New York, and a saxophone player named Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro) is working the crowd for a date when he lands on Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli), a young singer who isn't interested. Martin Scorsese follows the two of them as their careers start a slow climb, with Jimmy's ego pushing against Francine's voice at every turn. What they have is real, and it is never easy for either of them.
