Truman Gates (Patrick Swayze), a Chicago cop raised in the Kentucky hills, sets out to find the men who killed his younger brother. His older brother Briar (Liam Neeson) has the same plan and no interest in waiting for a badge to make it legal. John Irvin sets the Appalachian family against the Chicago Outfit, and the film is about what blood owes blood, and whether the law gets a say.
