What pulls a young man out of his parents' Brooklyn apartment and into Greenwich Village in 1953 is the hope that someone there will finally take his acting seriously. Larry Lapinsky (Lenny Baker) leaves behind his mother, Faye (Shelley Winters), who phones and visits with a worry that follows him down every street. Paul Mazursky puts Larry among the new friends he makes in the Village, and Ellen Greene's Sarah Roth sits across a cheap table with him.
