Nicholas (Michael Jayston) wants to keep the throne and the family life that comes with it, and he rules Russia in 1904 as if neither could be taken from him. His wife Alexandra (Janet Suzman) shares that wish, while the war and the unrest of his people grow beyond their control. Franklin J. Schaffner follows the household through the years to 1918, the five children gathered in Siberian exile.
