In 1960s Florida, two Black teenagers, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), are sent to the Nickel Academy, a reform school known for abusing its students. RaMell Ross adapts Colson Whitehead's novel, which was inspired by the real Dozier School for Boys. Their friendship is the film's subject, and it is set against what a place like this does to the boys inside it.
