James Vanning (Aldo Ray) wants only to prove he had no part in a murder and a robbery, but two men are hunting him and the police are close behind. Jacques Tourneur follows him as he pieces together what happened, with nothing to go on but his own memory. The one person who reaches him is Marie Gardner (Anne Bancroft), a stranger he cannot be sure he should trust.
