Stan Carlisle (Tyrone Power) is a drifter who takes a job with a traveling carnival and sets his sights on the mind-reading act of Zeena Krumbein (Joan Blondell) and her alcoholic husband. Edmund Goulding gave Power the unsavory lead he had asked the studio for, a man who treats every person he meets as a lever to pull. Stan studies the act at night between the tents, and every trick he learns is one he means to use.
