Rembrandt van Rijn (Martin Freeman) takes on a commission to paint a company of Amsterdam's civic militia in 1642, while Saskia (Eva Birthistle), Geertje (Jodhi May) and Hendrickje (Emily Holmes) move through his household and his bed. Peter Greenaway follows the painter as he begins to see a murderer among the militiamen. What he paints in that crowd of faces is a question of who is allowed to be seen and who is allowed to stay hidden.
