Chanda Sahay (Swara Bhasker) is a 35-year-old domestic worker who lives in a cluster of cramped homes behind the Taj Mahal, saving everything she earns for her 14-year-old daughter Appu (Riya Shukla). Then Appu says she wants to leave school and become a maid like her mother. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari follows Chanda as she makes an odd, stubborn choice: she enrolls in the same class as Appu and sits down at a desk in the room.
