“This holiday season, be Italian.”

A week before cameras roll, the director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) has no script and no idea what his film is about. He goes looking for it among the women in his life: his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his mistress Carla (Penélope Cruz), his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman). Rob Marshall stages Guido's memories and worries as song, and what runs underneath is a man who takes from everyone around him and gives little back.
