Winston Smith (Peter Cushing) works for the Party, the all-powerful regime ruled by Big Brother, and he has started to want things it forbids: his own thoughts, and Julia (Yvonne Mitchell), a fellow member of the Party. Together they look for a way to bring it down. Rudolph Cartier directed this adaptation of Orwell's novel for BBC television, broadcast live on 12 December 1954, and it drew complaints from viewers and questions in Parliament.
