London in 1984 is a city of rubble and rationing, part of Oceania, a superstate ruled by the Party and its leader Big Brother. Winston Smith (John Hurt) works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting old records so that the leaders always come out well. His only pleasure is Julia (Suzanna Hamilton), and he keeps meeting her, though the Party forbids it and a telescreen watches every room he enters.
