A virus that kills only grasses, wheat and rice among them, is spreading, and London is tearing itself apart in food riots. John Custance (Nigel Davenport), an architect, sets out north with his wife Ann (Jean Wallace), their daughter Mary (Lynne Frederick) and a few friends, heading for his brother's farm in Westmorland. Cornel Wilde sends them across England on foot with no guarantee the valley has food, or that anyone there will share it.
