Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye) has learned to keep his head down on the sugar cane plantations of Mauritius in 1759, where the French settlers hold the island and the enslaved live in fear. His daughter Mati (Anna Thiandoum), sixteen, will not do the same. Simon Moutaïrou sets the two of them against each other in the cane fields, the father bent over his work, the daughter standing straight.
