John Gant (Audie Murphy) is a hired killer who rides into the town of Lordsburg without saying who he is there to kill. Every leading citizen has an enemy, so each one starts to wonder whether the name on the bullet is theirs. Jack Arnold, better known for his science fiction, lets the dread build between Gant and the local doctor, Luke Canfield (Charles Drake), who is the one man in town Gant seems willing to talk to.
