No, or the Vain Glory of Command

(1990)Directed by Manoel de Oliveira107 minWar, Drama, History

Second Lieutenant Cabrita (Luís Miguel Cintra) is a history student turned conscript, and he wants his men to understand the war they are marching toward. So he talks, and as the patrol moves through an African colony in revolt in 1973, Manoel de Oliveira cuts away to the battles Cabrita describes. Each episode is a Portuguese defeat, and the film treats them as the country's history, with glory sitting a long way behind the losses.
