None But the Lonely Heart
“"Black as the Ace I am!"”
Ernie Mott (Cary Grant), a young Cockney drifter with no ambitions, wants nothing more than to keep moving, but he comes home to help his sickly mother, Ma Mott (Ethel Barrymore), run her shop. Clifford Odets, adapting Richard Llewellyn's novel, sets the Motts' money troubles against the pull of crime. Ernie's feeling for his mother, rough and unspoken, is the thing that keeps him from leaving again.
