Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is a Madison Avenue advertising man who talks fast and lives on his mother's patience, until he is mistaken for a spy. The wrong identity sends him on a deadly chase across the country, with Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) behind it and Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) somewhere along the route. Hitchcock puts Grant in a gray suit and keeps him moving, the suit the one steady thing in view.
